New Minecraft font sources
late Sep 2026We updated fonts.chrissx.de on 2026-09-25. The pull request added new font sources for Minecraft.
The main new source was Mojangles (also known as Minecraft Seven) from minecraftplot.com. It looked almost the same as the previous font, but some glyph shapes differed slightly and more closely matched those used in the game. It also contained even fewer glyphs.
NOTE
Unfortunately, there is no Minecraft Six font.
Compare both sources directly in your browser:
Old (broken* in most browsers)

!"#$%&'()*+-/:;<=>?@[\]^_`{|}~
the quick brown fox is bold
the quick brown fox is italic
New (old sources removed so you're guaranteed to see the change)

!"#$%&'()*+-/:;<=>?@[\]^_`{|}~

* The old files fail Chromium and Firefox’s OpenType Sanitizer (OTS): their cmap maps U+FFFF to glyph id 110, but the font only contains glyphs 0-109, so OTS rejects the whole file (Range glyph reference too high (110 > 109)) and the @font-face silently falls back. Safari has no such sanitizer and renders the old font fine, as do copies installed locally and referenced via local(), which are used without re-validation.
Browsers now first look for the locally installed fonts Minecraft Seven v2, Minecraft Seven, and Mojangles, which were added, followed by Minecraft. They then try the Mojangles OpenType file. The existing EOT, WOFF2, and TTF files remain as fallback sources.
Licensing
The old source is Minecraft Regular 1.0 by Pwnage_Block from 2011 and lists its license as CC BY-SA 3.0. The new source is Mojangles Regular by olek molek from 2022 and is offered under the FontStruct Non-Commercial License. The licensing situation around the Minecraft font has always been uncertain, so anyone using it should check the original sources and their license terms.
We’d really like to use the “official” source (links to woff2; woff, ttf, eot also available), but it doesn’t have CORS headers and redistributing the files would likely violate their Usage Guidelines.
Character coverage
The new font contains only space, comma, period, digits, and ASCII letters. Compared with the old font, 44 code points are missing, including common punctuation and several Unicode characters, e.g. !”#$%&’()*+-/:;<=>?@[\]^_`{|}~
The old font files remaining in the @font-face src list do not provide per-character fallback. Missing characters instead fall back to the next item in your font-family. Unsupported characters may therefore render in a different font.
Bold and italic behavior
Both the old and new files are Regular fonts. The new local source order can nevertheless resolve bold and italic contexts differently, either by finding locally installed variants or by causing the browser to synthesize a style. This can cause visual regressions, especially with headings.
This is why cmdesigns 0.1.9 explicitly added font-weight: 400 to the CMText component. Consumers that use the Minecraft font should consider explicitly setting font-weight to avoid surprises.
